Fish Wish by Bob Barner

Fish Wish (32 pages)
by Bob Barner

RM40
RM25

From School Library Journal

A trip to an aquarium leads a young boy to wonder, "If I were a fish-" and his imagination takes over. Barner's clever use of perspective shows the bright orange clownfish (the boy's alter ego) changing in size depending on which sea creatures are nearby. Readers can follow it through its colorful underwater world on a coral reef, swimming past dolphins, sea turtles, octopus, squid, jellyfish, sea horses, shrimps, crabs, sea anemone, and starfish.
The rhythmic text expresses the action. Double-page spreads can easily be viewed from a distance. The clever, textured collage illustrations, made with commercial and handmade papers, foil, beads, ribbon, antique buttons, fabric, cork, and pastels, warrant a closer look. A diorama with a numbered key identifies the creatures of the reef, and a spread that includes brief facts about them and information about coral reefs is appended. This engaging picture book with its simple text and bright illustrations offers a creative introduction to the natural world of the sea.

From Kirkus Reviews

A dazzling introduction to the creatures living in the increasingly threatened environment of a coral reef. "If I were a fish,'' thinks a child who watches an orange clownfish and imagines himself becoming the fish, taking readers through the author's bright collages of handcrafted papers, buttons, foils, fabric, beads, and ribbons. Oversized type undulates through the ocean, describing dolphins above, sea turtles gliding by, an octopus flanked by a squid squirting ink, sea horses, shrimps, crabs, and a cloud of jellyfish. All leap out of the pages in startling colors. Night finds the clownfish tucked into the tentacles of a sea anemone and making a ``fish wish'' to welcome the scuba-geared child of the opening to its environment.
The symbiotic relationship of clownfish to sea anemone is explained in notes in the back, along with interesting facts about the rest of these saltwater creatures. Other back matter includes a diorama with a key to its inhabitants and just enough information about coral reefs to whet young appetites. A fresh and appealing look at a fascinating environment.

The children can learn many sea creatures through this wonderful picture books, such as sea turtle, squid, dolphin, trumpet fish, angelfish, grouper, moray eel, stingray, shrimps, barracuda, clownfish, sea horse, hermit crab, sea cucumber, giant blue clam, octopus, flounder and sea snake.

Little Quack's ABC's by Lauren Thompson

Little Quack's ABC's (26 pages)
by Lauren Thompson
Illustrated by Derek Anderson

RM20
RM15

Little Quack may be familiar to some kids and he is a typical "boy." In this "Super Chubby" board book, kids learn the alphabet while also exploring Little Quack's world. His habitat includes creatures that are around him like and ants and those that are noticed by others like the butterfly which his brother Widdle spies. The letters of the alphabet are printed in a different color to make them stand out on the page.

The text is not just a hodgepodge of things; it has a story line as we spend a day with Quack. Everything appears to be the sorts of things Little Quack and his siblings would see—a caterpillar, flower, grass, ladybug, mama, nest and closing with a big yawn and "five sleepy ducklings ...zzzzzz!" Thompson provides an easy way to review the alphabet in a book that will surely be read many times with kids and parents pointing to the letters.

Counting Sheep by Dr. Julie Glass

Counting Sheep (32 pages)

What do you do if you can't sleep? Count sheep! That's what the restless hero of this rollicking tale does. And when sheep don't work, he counts kangaroos by twos and monkeys by threes. But when he gets to bees by fours, the animals run amok! Then it's a countdown to dream time. With energetic, bright illustrations and rhythmic text, this is a great introduction to the idea of counting by sets, a precursor to multiplication.

Wonderful Mathematics story book for young readers!

I Love Bugs! by Emma Dodd

I Love Bugs! (26 pages)
by

Dodd’s latest installment is sure to make bug lovers of us all. Follow the fearless young, curly haired young boy as he explores all types of bugs like “springy jumpy leapy bugs” or “whiny-buzzy-sound bugs” found in the grass, under logs, in the sky and even at a picnic.

Simple strings of choice adjectives move the story along at a great read-a-loud pace and the bouncy rhythm never misses a beat. Dodd’s language is as explosive and colorful as her full spread illustrations. Using bright, bold colors and thick black outlines amidst a variety of textures truly captures the details of the book’s creepy, crawly subjects without the scare factor.

Dodd is careful to use large, almost inquisitive eyes for all the bugs, reassuring younger readers who may feel apprehensive around the real things. Even the “stripy swipey sting bugs” appear friendly enough to picnic with. Young children will love spotting their favorite bugs like butterflies and lightning bugs, which are easily recognizable, and will squeal along with the narrator at the final hairy encounter.

The Letters Are Lost by Lisa Campbell Ernst

The Letters Are Lost (32 pages)
by Lisa Campbell Ernst

RM24

Ernst, the author of such ebullient favorites as Zinnia and Dot (1992), here offers an alphabet book that is just right for its target audience. The premise is that the wooden blocks, with one letter to a block, were once together in their box. But now they've all gone astray. Where are they? Well, the A is in an airplane, the B has tumbled into the bath, and the L has landed in a pile of leaves.

Each block is prominently featured in the framed paintings that show simple shapes and situations, which are, for the most part, easily identifiable to young ones. Ernst gets high marks for having everything just right: the colors, the size, the appeal.

At the book's conclusion, the blocks are back together but "not for long. Soon they will disappear again. Can you guess where they might go?" An open invitation to have children make up their own scenarios while learning their letters. Fun!

Children will delight in finding out in this vibrant, charming introduction to the alphabet.

Every preschooler will relate to this empowering text that is fun to both hear and say.
The entire book is written in rhyming couplets printed on cheerful backgrounds with lively colored pen-and-ink drawings.
The page with "Hi! to teacher, coat on hook. Run to shelf and find a book." introduces a bright yellow room with several children already sitting on a rug looking at a book, one child hanging his coat on a hook, several parents at the door with their children in hand, and a cheerful young woman leaning down to greet the new arrivals.
Another scene illustrates outside time with children running, playing, and sliding down a sliding board. "Bouncy balls and slippery slide. Time for snack, march back inside." There is time to rest and time to play with a pet hamster or study some goldfish.
There are songs to sing and games to play. There is time for toys and time for clean up and, on the last page, "Coat from hook, Then get in line. Bye to friends. It's Mommy time!"
This is a wonderful books for parents who want to prepare their toddler to school.
